Seasonable Tips

Strawberries

Come Early! Your strawberries will store better if picked in cooler temps and the best picks are always earlier in the day. If you have sore knees, bring a pad or other knee protection. Once the season begins we typically always have enough daily ripe fruit available to be open full days, but as always, you can check the INFO line for daily picking conditions. Learn more about our varieties HERE.

Raspberries

Please call the INFO line before coming, as there are times in raspberry season when we are not open regular hours. If you are looking for larger quantities come early, it is often slim picking. More info about our varieties can be found HERE.

Blueberries

Most days blueberries are easy to find. We have well pruned bushes and the competing weed situation is under control, so picking is easy here. If you are having trouble finding berries look low and inside the bush because the easy to find berries are always the first to go. Please always call the INFO line before coming to check picking conditions and hours. Check out our FREEZING AND CANNING instructions to enjoy blueberries all year and learn more about our varieties HERE.

Cherries

They are fun to pick under the bird netting. Please be aware that the bird netting is an expensive and necessary tool to offer pick your own cherries - take care when you are picking. Even after their picking season starts, cherries are not typically available every day, be sure to first call the INFO line for the daily picking details and learn more about cherries HERE!

Peaches

Call ahead. There are times (especially early season), when we are in between varieties. We will always offer the varieties that are ready on the INFO line. Be very gentle with your peaches, they bruise easily. Using the sides of your fingers, grasp the peach, twist and pull. If it does not come off easy it is not ripe. For more info on varieties we offer, click HERE.

Apples

Apple season starts in shorts and T-shirt weather, and ends with coats, hats and gloves. Please check the weather before coming to dress appropriately. Apples are the easiest fruit to pick. Call the INFO line to get the daily varietal availability and check the APPLE page for more details. Once here, there is always a person to direct you where to go, what apples are best, and any other picking information you may need.

Hard Cider

Mostly grown and made right here at Butternut Farm, its hard to find a more locally made adult beverage. During your first visit to the CIDER HOUSE you will need to put a deposit down on a growler (the container) to bring your cider home in. This glass jar is 100% re-usable, just give it a quick rinse when your done and bring it back to the farm on your next visit for a refill in a sanitized growler or a refund of your deposit.
